The Ellsworth/Romig Neighborhood is one of the oldest in the city, featuring the city's oldest house at South 6th Street and Romig. It housed both working class, business and professional people in its earliest history. This created a neighborhood with modest and stately homes in proximity to each other. The district is on the national Register of Historic Places, with an additional Local Historic District involving the structure at 407-409 South 3rd Street. Various types of commercial and industrial enterprises, some of which persist until the present, have existed up to the mid 1900's: river shipping, manufacturing, slaughterhouses, grain mills as well as an active rail switchyard. Numerous grocery stores and taverns sprang up throughout the district during the early years. |

There is a park and playground located at South 3rd and Fountain Streets. A community center serves the area, as does the nearby Miller School. Public transportation is convenient to the area.
The Ellsworth/Romig Neighborhood Association is an organization of residents and landlords with interests in the near-south side. Meetings are the second Tuesday of each month, taking place in various people's homes.
